He had not seen his mother since leaving home when he was 10. His father died shortly afterwards. Since becoming a father two years ago, Yosef decided the time was right for him to return and find as many members of his family as he could.

The exhibition’s moving photographs examine life in Ethiopia today and Yosef’s return to his roots. The highlight of the exhibition is his emotional meeting with his mother.

On meeting his mother Yosef said “I was not expecting her to be there at all. I was prepared for the worst. She was younger than I thought.”

He added: “It was very hard, after almost 20 years to be in the place where I grew up and not be able to communicate effectively.”
